Introduction: PGDIE is one of the very few courses that enjoy corporate excellence for over three decades. Its inception is to provide students with methodologies and systematic approaches to deal with diverse industrial challenges, PGDIE has evolved as a course for developing Managers with cross- functional skills.

No. of Seats: A total of 111 seatsare available. Reservation of SC/ST/OBC belonging to non-creamy layer andPhysically Disabled candidates is according to Governmentregulation. Seats arealso available for sponsored candidates.

Admission Procedure: Every candidate has to qualify through GATE(2008 & 2009). This will be followed by Group Discussion and Interview of the short listed candidates to be held at NITIE, Mumbai. Work experience will be given suitable weightage. Candidates need to submit a photocopy of GATE score card / printout of GATE score from website. Selection of Industry sponsored candidates with 2 years industry experience is through personal interview only.
Application Process: Interestedcandidates can apply to NITIE through ONLINE mode: Candidates can fill theapplication form ONLINE. Application fee of Rs 1000/- (Rs 500/- in case ofSC/SC/PD candidates) and applicable bank charges can be paid in the form ofchallan (downloadable from NITIE website) in any branch of State Bank of India.Hard copy of filled in online Application duly signed by the candidate should be sent to The Deputy/ Assistant Registrar (Academic),NITIE ,Vihar Lake, Mumbai – 400087 ,along withInstitute’s copy of the challan and copies of the relevant certificates asmentioned in the Instructions section of the website. The candidates applyingfor the Industry Sponsored Category (ISP) should fill in the Sponsorship Formalso. GATE score is not required for ISP candidates.

IIT-JEE 2010 Joint Entrance Exam to be held on April 10, 2010

IITJEE 2010 Joint Entrance Exam will be held on April 10, 2010. Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission to the undergraduate courses in 15 Indian Institute of Technology’s (IITs) and ISMU, Dhanbad, would be conducted on April 10, 2010. This is declared by the Undergraduate Admissions Committee said on Friday.

Two papers, each having separate sections in chemistry, mathematics and physics will have objective type questions “designed to test comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability of candidates,” the committee said in a release.

The syllabus for the IIT JEE 2010 examination will soon be available on the IIT website.

In accordance with the National Policy of Education (1986), Government of India started Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs). Presently 575 JNVs are spread in 27 States and 7 Union Territories.

These are co-educational residential schools fully financed and administered by Government of India through an autonomous organization, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti. Admissions in JNVs are made through the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) at Class VI.

CAT means Common Admission Test. That is held for the admission in Topmost Business schools. SP Jain, MICA, and T A Pai are such a few top business school. The test will be held in Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) and it is on the basis of CAT result that the eligible candidates are short listed and called for a Group Discussion and Personal Interview. The percentile secured in CAT is assessed by the B-Schools in India for short-listing candidates for admissions to their various MBA Programs.

IIM CAT 2008-2009 Eligibility

1. 3 years bachelor degree with 50% marks (45% marks for SC/ST)
2. Those students who are awaiting results are also eligible for the CAT 2009.

IIM CAT 2008-2009 How to Apply:

Application form can be taken from branches of Axis Bank on payment of Rs. 1300/- (Rs. 650/- for SC/ST candidates). Indian Institutes Of Technology (IIT)

Studying in an IIT or Indian Institute of Technology is the first thing that every ambitious engineering aspirant can think of in India. IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee are the seven IITs in India that are also termed as National Institutes of Importance. Set up under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1963, IITs are statutory bodies. The central administration of the IITs is looked after by the IIT Council. IITc Council is the apex body which is headed by the Human Resource Department of Indian Government.

Beside the existing seven IITs, nine more IITs have been proposed to be set up in different parts of the country. These states are - Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, Orissa, Bihar and Punjab. IT-BHU will also be converted into an IIT. For a nation which is huge in every dimension needs some more institutes of high standard technology education.

Development of IITs
:
The foundation for the IITs in India was laid in 1946 by the Executive Council of Viceroy, Sir Jogendra Singh.
The main aim was to develop a technical structure to aid the industrial development in the country.
On May 1950, the first Indian Institute of Technology was set up in Kharagpur.
By 1961 four more such institutes were established in Mumbai, Kanpur, Chennai and Delhi.
IIT Guwahati was established in 1994.
In 2001, University of Roorkee was granted IIT status. This formed the seventh campus of the IITs in India.
IIT Admissions
Getting into an IIT is a dream that thousands of Indians nourishes. However, as IITs offer different types of courses, the admission procedure also varies. Admission to most of the courses depends on the performance of the candidates in the concerned entrance examination.

IIT Entrance Test

(A) Undergraduate Courses:
While IIT JEE is the entrance examination for getting admitted to any of the bachelor degree courses, for B.Des and B Arch separate aptitude tests have to be given along with IIT-JEE.

(B)Postgraduate Courses: For studying Postgraduate courses in IITs, one needs to appear in the appropriate entrance exam.

Examiantion Fees for NSTSE is nominal, examination fee is Rs.100 and Rs.15 for Student Performance Report.

PATTERN OF IITJEE-2008

Question Papers

There will be two question papers, each of three hours duration. Both the question papers would consist of three separate sections on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Questions in these papers will be of objective type, which are to be answered on a specially designed machine-gradable sheet (ORS – Optical Response Sheet) using HB pencils only. Incorrect answers will be awarded negative marks.

Language and Font of Question Papers

Candidates can opt for Question Papers either in English or in Hindi. This option should be exercised while filling the application form, and it cannot be changed at any later stage.

Visually impaired candidates will be provided with question papers with 20% enlarged font. However, to avail this facility, candidates should make a request along with the application form.

Calculators and Log Tables

Use of calculators and log tables is NOT permitted in JEE-2008.

Aptitude Test for B.Arch. and B.Des.

Candidates called for counselling and desirous of joining the B.Arch. and B.Des. courses will be required to qualify in an Aptitude Test to be conducted at each counselling institute on June 21, 2008. The test will consist of two papers, each of two hours duration – from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon, and from 2.00 pm to 4:00 pm. Candidates who fail to qualify in the Aptitude Test will not be eligible for admission to either B.Arch. or B.Des. courses. Question papers for aptitude test for B.Arch and B.Des will be in English only.

Ranking

Only those candidates who attempt both Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be considered for the ranking. Marks in Physics will be equal to marks in Physics section of Paper 1 + marks in Physics section of Paper 2. Similar procedure will be followed for Chemistry and Mathematics. Based on the cut-off marks in the individual subjects as well as the aggregate marks in the Examination, a common merit list will be prepared without any relaxed criteria. In addition, separate merit lists of candidates belonging to the SC, ST, and PD categories will be prepared with different relaxed norms relevant to their categories. While preparing these merit lists, if a candidate belongs to more than one category of relaxed norms, then he/she for the purpose of ranking shall be considered in all the categories in which he/she qualifies. There will be no separate list of wait-listed candidates.

Eligibility Conditions in IIT JEE 2008

A candidate has to satisfy all the eligibility conditions given below :

* A candidate can attempt JEE only twice, in consecutive years.
* Candidates appearing for JEE-2008 should have either passed in 2007 or should be appearing in 2008 in the qualifying examination listed in section 7.1 and should satisfy the eligibility criteria listed in section 7.2.
* Candidates should meet the age requirements given in section 7.4.
* Candidates should not have accepted admission by paying full fees at any of the IITs, IT-BHU, Varanasi and ISMU, Dhanbad, through earlier JEE.

Students of our generations are hard pressed for time. They have so many distractions today so that it becomes very difficult for them to concentrate on their studies. IIT JEE examination does not demand memorizing everything. Rather IIT JEE demands understanding of the topics. Our experience has shown that by mugging up and memorizing everything students will not be able to crack IIT JEE. Rather student should give time to each topic and relentlessly go about the same unless he or she gets full hold over the topic.

For this, a proper approach to problem solving is mandated. There are many ways in which one go about problem solving. But best approach is to go step by step. This may even take more time initially but this is the only way to bring about smooth organized flow of thoughts and clarity of concepts in to student's mind. Common GD PI for all IIMs?
Unlike the UPSC which conducts a common interview for the various cadres of the Civil Services Examinations, the IIMs have been conducting separate Group Discussions (GD) and Personal Interviews (PI) for each IIM. This has allowed each IIM to maintain its own discretion in selecting students as per its criteria - over the years we have often noticed that a students may get an interview call from say IIM Ahmedabad but not from IIM Bangalore or he may get a call from IIM Kolkata and IIM Lucknow but not from IIM Indore. This was because of certain differences in the selection criteria adopted by an IIM - in the last few years, it has been observed that IIM Bangalore prefers to give a GD PI call to a student with work-ex compared to another candidate who may have performed better at the CAT. Similary, the other IIMs had their own selection system.

Now an IIM Review Committee headed by R C Bhargava has recommended a common GD PI System for the IIMs. With the number of IIMs slated to increase to upto 13 in the coming years, the committee feels that it will no longer be feasible for candidates who get multiple Group Discussion & Interview calls to manage. It is also a waste of time, since the same job can be accomplished with much fewer GDs & PIs if the system was unified by the IIMs. The final allotment would then be similar to what happens after the IIT JEE or the Medical Entrance Exams - starting from the 1st rank students can choose the IIM they wish to enrol in.

However, the report adds that not all IIM Directors were happy with the recommendations and as such it may be initially implemented on a voluntary basis. While a common Interview System for the IIMs has its obvious benefits, the existing system had its own merits.

Different admission criteria allowed a larger pool of students to have a reasonable chance of making it to an IIM - a student may have been weak in a particular aspect, but if even one of the IIMs had a relaxed outlook on that particular point, this student stood a chance of realizing his IIM dream. The unified system would now have one 'ideal profile' or 'aggregate sum of points on one set of admission criteria', thus ruling out many bright students.

Another benefit of the separate GD PI system was that it reduced the pressure on the interviewee - just one bad day wouldn't make or break him; while a bad candidate would always be found lacking, a bright student who might have had a bad interview or GD at a particular IIM would get a chance to redeem himself in the next one.

12.1 Definition

Every square matrix can be associated to an expression or a number which is known as determinant.

If the matrix has only one element a11 then a11 is the determinant.

Determinant of a square matrix of order 3

Determinant of a square matrix of order 3 is the sum of the product of elements a1j in the first row with (-1) 1+j times the determinant of a 2×2 sub-matrix obtained by leaving the first row and column passing through the element.

(i) Only square matrices have determinants.
(ii) The determinant of a square matrix of order three can be expanded along any row or column.

Determinant of a square matrix of order 4 or more

(iii) Determinant of a square matrix of order 4 or more can be determined following the procedure of finding the determinant of a square matrix of order 3. But in this case, especially in the case of 4×4 matrix, when we omit the rows and columns containing the elements of a row, we get 3×3 sub-matrices and we have to find determinants for them.

12.2 Singular matrix

A square matrix is a singular matrix if its determinant is zero.
Otherwise it is a non-singular matrix.

12.3 Minors and cofactors

Minor: For a square matrix [aij] or order n, the minor Mij of aij, in A is the determinant of the square sub-matrix of order (n-1), obtained by leaving (or striking off) ith row and jth column of A.

Cofactor: Cofactor of an element aij in a square matrix [aij] is termed Cij.

Cij = (-1) i+j Mij

Mij is the minor of element aij in a square matrix [aij].

Minors and cofactors are defined for elements of a square matrix only. They are not defined for determinants.

12.4 Properties of determinants

1. For a square matrix, the sum of the product of elements of any row (or column) with their cofactors is always equal to determinants of the matrix.

2. For a square matrix, the sum of the product of elements of any row (or column) with the cofactors of corresponding elements of some other row (or column) is zero.

3. The value of a determinant remains unchanged if its rows and columns are interchanged.

4. If any two rows (or columns) of a determinant are interchanged, then the value of the determinant changes by minus sign only.

5. If any two rows or columns of a determinant are identical then its value is zero.

6. If each element of a row (or a column) of a determinant is multiplied by a constant k, then the value of the new determinant is ‘k’ times the value of the original determinant.

7. If each element of a row (or a column) of a determinant is expressed as a sum of two or more terms, then the determinant can be expressed as the sum of two or more determinants of the same order.

8. If each element of a row (or a column) of a determinant is multiplied by the same constant and then added to the corresponding elements of some other row (column) then the value of the determinant remains same.

9. If each element of a row (or column) in a determinant is zero, then its value is zero.

10. If the matrix is a diagonal square matrix then its determinant is the product of all the diagonal elements.

11. If A and B are square matrices of the same order, then

12. If a matrix is a triangular matrix of order n, then its determinant is the product of all the diagonal elements.

12.5 Evaluation of Determinants

To evaluate determinants or large matrices, we use the properties of determinants given in section 12.4 above, to create many zeroes in the elements of a row or column and then expand the determinant using elements and cofactors of that row or column.

12.6 Evaluation of Determinants by using Factor Theorem

If f(x) is a polynomial and f(α) = 0 the, (x- α) is a factor of f(x).

If a determinant is a polynomial in x, then (x- α) is factor of the determinant if its value is zero when we put x = α.

Using this rule we can find determinant as a product of its factors.

12.7 Product of Determinants

A definition of product of determinants is similar to the rule of multiplication of matrices.

Andhra boasts of producing maximum IITians

Andhra Pradesh breeds the most number of IITians in the country. At least the JEE organizing committee’s report to MHRD proves so. This year the maximum number of students qualifying for IIT from a single state - 1,697 - came from Andhra Pradesh with Uttar Pradesh following next with 1,194 students out of a total of 5,524 successful candidates.

According to the data compiled after the joint entrance examination (JEE) in 2007, Andhra had given the highest number of students to IITs - 1,384. According to IIT veterans, Andhra Pradesh has been on the top of the state-wise list of qualifying students in the last few years.

“This has been a general perception among all IITians that number of students coming to IIT from AP is more than from other state. The main reason for it is that Hyderabad is a major hub of coaching centres like Kota. And I must say, these coaching centres are doing a great job in training students for IIT JEE,” said M S Anand, director, IIT-Chennai.

According to IIT professors, many students from south India migrate to Hyderabad for coaching and manage to crack JEE. So the students coming from Andhra Pradesh may not necessarily be natives. Most of them are known to go for a seat in IIT Chennai or IIT Bombay. And, with IIT Hyderabad debuting this year under the mentorship of IIT Chennai, the number is expected to go up.

“Students in Andhra Pradesh did not have an IIT till now. But they studied really hard and usually joined Chennai or Bombay. But of late, it seems most of them are going to IIT-Bombay. They say they like the food there better!” remarked Anand. Surprisingly, only 202 out of 9,929 students qualified from Tamil Nadu itself.

According to R Chattopadhyay, JEE chairperson, IIT-Delhi, this trend has come up in the last couple of years. “Once the students join the classes, nobody knows who comes from where because they all mingle so well. But the figures in the last two years have shown that most students qualify from Andhra. Many students also travel to Hyderabad for coaching adding to the number,” he said. According to IIT officials, while IIT Delhi mostly gets students from north India in BTech, there are many students from Andhra Pradesh in the MTech course.

As for the maximum number of students appearing for JEE, UP leads the pack with 72,028 students appearing for JEE 2008 while 57,488 in 2007. Bihar also had a huge number of IIT aspirants - 30,490 this year and 14,854 in 2007 - however, unlike UPSC exams, they could not take IITs by storm. While 533 qualified this time, 146 were successful last year.

BITSAT is the computer based online test for entrance to one of the most reputed technical institutes in India: BITS Pilani (Birla Institute of Technology & Science), for its campuses located in Pilani as well as Goa. Starting 2008,it's also recruiting for its campus at Hyderabad.It's generally conducted in through the months of April to June. It was started in 2005 with about 48000 students giving this test. The number increased to more than 53000 in 2006 and to nearly 68000 in 2007.

For BITS Pilani merit is the sole criterion and the aspiring candidates are required to have a minimum aggregate of 80% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in the 12th examination with at least 60% marks in each of the subjects. Board toppers can apply for direct admissions also.

BITSAT is a 3 hour duration test offered to candidates on computers at dedicated computer centres at different cities spread across India. The test has objective type (multiple choice) questions only.

To further the cause of women education, BITS Pilani has shown a special gesture by making the BITSAT application fee for girl candidates as Rs 400/- only instead of Rs 800/-. In addition, the Institute will try its best to accommodate all girl candidates at their first preference of test centre for appearing in BITSAT.

BITSAT 2008 will have around 114000 candidates.

BITSAT is an entrance test for getting admission into one of the campuses of the prestigious Birla Institute of Technology and Science(BITS-Pilani).BITS has campuses at Pilani,Goa and in Dubai.Starting this year BITS is also taking students into its newly established BITS Hyderabad Campus.Around 1,16,000 students are going to take BITSAT-2008 and only 2000(<2%) of them are going to be selected.

BITSAT is the first complete online based admission procedure for any undergraduate course.These online tests are conducted at seventeen centers in India, during the months of May and June every year.

BITSAT-2008 Test Format:

BITSAT-2008 will be of total 3-hour duration (without break). The test consists of four parts:

Part I : Physics
Part II : Chemistry
Part III : (a) English Proficiency and (b) Logical Reasoning
Part IV : Mathematics OR Biology
Students who have taken Mathematics and not Biology in 10+2 have to appear for Mathematics in Part IV. Students who have taken Biology in 10+2 and not Mathematics have to appear for Biology in Part IV. Students who have taken both Mathematics and Biology in 10+2 can opt for either Mathematics or Biology in Part IV. Candidates who appear in Biology in Part IV will be eligible for admission to M.Sc. (Hons.) Biological Sciences and B.Pharm. (Hons.) only. Candidates who appear in Mathematics in Part IV will be eligible for admission to any of the Integrated First degree programmes, including M.Sc.(Hons.) Biological Sciences and B.Pharm.( Hons.).

All questions are of objective type (multiple choice questions); each question with choice of four answers, only one being correct choice. Each correct answer fetches 3 marks, while each incorrect answer has a penalty of 1 mark. No marks are awarded for not attempted questions. While the candidate can skip a question, the computer will not allow the candidate to choose more than one option as correct answer.

There will be 150 questions in all. The number of questions in each part is as follows:

There is no time limit for individual parts of the test. The candidate can go back and change any of his/her answers among the 150 questions.

If a candidate answers all the 150 questions (without skipping any question), the candidate will have an option of attempting 12 (twelve) extra questions, if there is still time left. These extra questions will be from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics / Biology only; four questions from each part. Further, once the candidate has opted for extra questions, he cannot go back for correction of any of the earlier answered 150 questions.

The questions are so designed that a good student will be able to answer 150 questions in 180 minutes. The extra questions (a maximum of 12) will give a chance to highly meritorious candidates to score higher. However, candidates should keep in mind the fact that there is negative marking for wrong answers and any attempt to answer the questions by pure guessing of the answers is not likely to have any advantage, but may result in a reduction in the total score.

The questions will be selected at random from a large question bank. Different candidates will get different question sets. An expert committee will ensure that the question sets are of comparable difficulty level, content, question type etc. In this matter, the decision of the expert committee will be final and binding on the candidate. All the questions and instructions of the test will be in English only.

Each candidate who registers for BITSAT-2008 will be instructed to download a ‘Hall Ticket’. Candidates with the hall ticket only will be allowed inside the test centers. Candidates should bring a pen for the purpose of rough work, signing etc. Blank sheets for rough work will be provided, if required. Calculators and logarithmic tables are not allowed in the test centers. Candidates are not allowed to bring any other personal belongings such as mobiles.

All centers are closely monitored for security and candidates’ identity and activities will be recorded using web cameras and/or closed circuit TV cameras. Anyone violating the rules of the test center will not be allowed to continue with the test and will be automatically disqualified.

Syllabus:

The BITSAT-2008 test will be conducted on the basis of NCERT syllabus for 11th and 12th class. The detailed syllabus is given in the Annexure. Candidates may refer to the NCERT textbooks for the contents. A sample test will be made available to the registered candidates at the BITS website on which he/she can practice as many times as desired.

In order to facilitate a large number of students all over India to participate in this test, apart from Pilani and Goa where it is expected that a large number of students will take the test, the Institute is also planning to offer the tests at dedicated test centers in several cities. The Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani (Rajasthan) which has pioneered many educational innovations for the past over three decades has been committed to cooperative education philosophy of work integrated learning for addressing the Human Resource Development issues of the Industry as well as Society at large.

Headquartered in Bangalore, Honeywell Technology Solutions Lab (HTSL) is an integral corporate arm of Honeywell International providing value to Honeywell's businesses and customers by providing technology, product and business solutions meeting global standards of quality, innovation and lifetime performance. Dr Krishna in his speech said that the curriculum undergone by the employees has added value to their current profile and urged them to proceed further for PhD. Dr Krishna also pointed out that while it is tough to pursue studies with work, one can achieve it if desired and determined.

In a colourful function organized at HTSL Bangalore on Monday 11 February 2008 (which also happens to be the auspicious day of Basant Panchami dedicated to worship of Saraswati Goddess of Learning) the employees who successfully completed the programs received their final degree certificates from Dr Krishna Mikkilineni Managing Director HTSL. Dr Krishna in his speech said that the curriculum undergone by the employees has added value to their current profile and urged them to proceed further for PhD. Dr Krishna also pointed out that while it is tough to pursue studies with work, one can achieve it if desired and determined.

Mr Sanjay Singh and Dr S Balasubramanian faculty members from BITS Pilani Bangalore off campus centre represented the Institute at the function. The graduating students thanked BITS Pilani and HTSL for the opportunity to pursue higher studies provided to them.

Prof L K Maheshwari Vice Chancellor BITS Pilani in his congratulatory message which was flashed in the venue urged the graduating students to contribute to the task of nation building and conveyed that if change is an inevitable challenge, then innovation is the response and knowledge is the weapon. Maytas Infra signs MoU with BITS Pilani

NEW DELHI: Construction and infrastructure company Maytas Infra Ltd on Friday said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the technical education institute, BITS Pilani to offer quality education to its employee through a joint initiative under the name of 'M BITS'.

As per the tie-up, diploma engineers from the Hyderabad-based company will enroll for an infrastructure technology course, which will be three-year programme with six semester and degree would be awarded by the BITS Pilani.

The company has entered into a strategic partnership with BITS Pilani to build world class infrastructure technology professionals in the country, Maytas said.

"Unique feature of M BITS is that the programme can be delivered in geographically distributed environment and Maytas would bring BITS certified trainers on board and would use advanced learning management system in disseminating the curriculum," the company said in statement.

2. Eligibility:
(i) For Admission to all the above programmes except B.Pharm. (Hons.) and M.Sc. (Hons.) Biological Science: Candidates who have passed the 12th examination of 10+2 system form a recognized Central or State board or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and adequate proficiency in English are eligible.

(ii) For admission to B.Pharm. (Hons.) and M.Sc. (Hons.) Biological Sciences: Candidates who have passed the 12th examination of 10+2 system from a recognized Central or State board or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Mathematics and adequate proficiency in English are eligible. Candidates having taken both Mathematics and Biology in 10+2 have to decide whether they wish to appear in Mathematics or Biology subject in BITSAT – 2008.

Admission to all the programmes is subject to the conditions given below.

The candidate should have obtained a minimum of aggregate 80% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects (if he/she has taken Mathematics in BITSAT) or a minimum of aggregate 80% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects (if she/he has taken Biology in BITSAT) in 12th examination, with at least 60% marks in each of the Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/ Biology subjects.

Students who are appearing for 12th examination in 2008 or who have passed 12th examination in 2008 or who have passed 12th Examination in 2006 or earlier are NOT eligible to appear in the BITSAT – 2008. Students who are presently studying in BITS at any of its campuses are not eligible to appear in BITSAT-2008.

Admissions will be made purely on merit. The merit position of the candidate for admission will be based on the score obtained by the candidate in the BITSAT-2008. However, their eligibility or admission is subject to fulfilling the requirement of minimum marks in 12th examination, a mentioned above.

First rank students of all the central and state boards in India for the year 2008 will be given direct admission to the program of their choice, irrespective of their BITSAT-2008 score as per the eligibility criteria mentioned above.

In addition to applying for and appearing in BITSAT-2008, candidates have to also apply for admission to BITS giving details of their 12th marks and preferences to different degree programmes offered. The prescribed application form for admission, the detailed application procedure and the final list of degree programmes offered will be available at the BITS website, by 20th May, 2008.

3. Details of BITSAT – 2008:
It will be a 3 hour duration test, offered to candidates on com;uters at dedicated centers at different cities in India. The test will have objective type (multiple choice) questions only. The test will be conducted during 9th May- 12th June 2008. The syllabus and other details of the test are available in the BITSAT – 2008. 4. How to apply:
Interested candidates should register their names for BITSAT-2008 by applying in the prescribed application form in one of the following modes:

(i) Complete the application form Online at http://www.bitsadmission.com/BITSAT/ and take the printout of the filled form. The completed application form along with the prescribed fees of Rs. 800/- (Rs. 400/- for female candidates) should be sent to Admissions Officer, BITS, Pilani – 333031. (ii) Obtain the application form by post from the under mentioned by sending a request on plain paper giving the candidate’s name, and gender with complete postal address, accompanied by a crossed DD for Rs. 900/- (Rs. 500 for Female candidates). Requests by post will be accepted only till 21st January 2008.

In the past, admission process of the Institute always ensured guaranteed admission to all the students who obtained first ranks in their respective board examinations. This has given a very vital input of highly meritorious students from all over India. First rank students of all the central and state boards in India for the year 2008 will be given direct admission to the program of their choice, irrespective of their BITSAT-2008 score as per the eligibility criteria mentioned above. 3. BITSAT Test Details

‘Computer Based Online test’ means the candidate sits in front of a computer and the questions are presented on the computer monitor and the candidate submits the answers through the use of key board or mouse. Each computer is connected to a server which prepares the question set and delivers it to the candidate on the computer. This is unlike the traditional paper-pencil based test which is generally offered on a single day to all candidates. BITSAT-2008 will be offered over a period of time and the candidate can choose the center, the day and time of his/her convenience to take the test, as described in the later sections.

BITSAT-2008 Test Format

BITSAT-2008 will be of total 3 hour duration (without break). The test consists of four parts:

Part I : Physics

Part II : Chemistry

Part III : (a) English Proficiency and (b) Logical Reasoning

Part IV : Mathematics OR Biology

Students who have taken Mathematics and not Biology in 10+2 have to appear for Mathematics in Part IV. Students who have taken Biology in 10+2 and not Mathematics have to appear for Biology in Part IV. Students who have taken both Mathematics and Biology in 10+2 can opt for either Mathematics or Biology in Part IV. Candidates who appear in Biology in Part IV will be eligible for admission to M.Sc. (Hons.) Biological Sciences and B.Pharm. (Hons.) only. Candidates who appear in Mathematics in Part IV will be eligible for admission to any of the Integrated First degree programmes, including M.Sc.(Hons.) Biological Sciences and B.Pharm.( Hons.).

All questions are of objective type (multiple choice questions); each question with choice of four answers, only one being correct choice. Each correct answer fetches 3 marks, while each incorrect answer has a penalty of 1 mark. No marks are awarded for not attempted questions. While the candidate can skip a question, the computer will not allow the candidate to choose more than one option as correct answer.

There is no time limit for individual parts of the test. The candidate can go back and change any of his/her answers among the 150 questions.

If a candidate answers all the 150 questions (without skipping any question), the candidate will have an option of attempting 12 (twelve) extra questions, if there is still time left. These extra questions will be from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics / Biology only; four questions from each part. Further, once the candidate has opted for extra questions, he can not go back for correction of any of the earlier answered 150 questions.

The questions are so designed that a good student will be able to answer 150 questions in 180 minutes. The extra questions (a maximum of 12) will give a chance to highly meritorious candidates to score higher. However, candidates should keep in mind the fact that there is negative marking for wrong answers and any attempt to answer the questions by pure guessing of the answers is not likely to have any advantage, but may result in a reduction in the total score.

The questions will be selected at random from a large question bank. Different candidates will get different question sets. An expert committee will ensure that the question sets are of comparable difficulty level, content, question type etc. In this matter, the decision of the expert committee will be final and binding on the candidate.

All the questions and instructions of the test will be in English only.

Each candidate who registers for BITSAT-2008 will be issued a ‘Hall Ticket’. Candidates with the hall ticket only will be allowed inside the test centers. Candidates should bring a pen for the purpose of rough work, signing etc. Blank sheets for rough work will be provided, if required. Calculators and logarithmic tables are not allowed in the test centers. Candidates are not allowed to bring any other personal belongings such as mobiles.

All centers are closely monitored for security and candidates’ identity and activities will be recorded using web cameras and/or closed circuit TV cameras. Anyone violating the rules of the test center will not be allowed to continue with the test and will be automatically disqualified.

BITSAT 2008 Syllabus:

The BITSAT-2008 test will be conducted on the basis of NCERT syllabus for 11th and 12th class. The detailed syllabus is given in the Annexure. Candidates may refer to the NCERT text books for the contents. About The Tests :
JEE is conducted annually in two stages (1) Screening (2)Mains
The screening test is of 3 hours duration, in physics, chemistry and mathematics with equal weightage in all the three subject. Test is pure objective in nature. For each correct response students gets 3 marks and for each incorrect response one mark is deducted. No penalty for unattempted questions. Main examination have three separate papers(non objective) in physics, chemistry and mathematics, each of two hour duration. The students who have qualified in Screening are only eligible for Main. All the papers are kept on the same day. In both the Screening and the Mains, Calculators, Log tables are not allowed.

The Language of Test :
The screening test is conducted in English and in Hindi. The option has to be exercised at the time of filling the application form. For the Main examination, students have choice of selecting one of the following language. Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Tamil & Telugu. Option has to be exercise at the time of filling the application form.

Results :
Based on the performance in individual subject as well as aggregate in the Main examination, final merit list is prepared. The result gets out by middle of June. It is also made available on website.

Aptitude Test for B.Arch and B.Des. :
Candidates called for counseling and desirous of joining the B.Arch and B.Des. courses have to qualify in an aptitude test conducted by respective Institutes.

If Tomorrow Never Comes…

As much as I wish for it not to come, it dead sure will.

Tomorrow is one day I’m not exactly looking forward to because it’s the day I’m going to have my chemistry board practical. Doesn’t sound like much of a deal does it? Wait then, let me just do some font formatting to give you a better idea. Here goes – Tomorrow, I have my Chemistry BOARD Practical. Get it now? Eh?

I’m really bad at sticking to the things I say. Just in the last post I said I was going to go into hibernation mode and here I am, making another post. And I’ve not even ventured close to hibernation mode. In fact I’ve actually become more active on Facebook than I’ve ever been. Not a really good sign is it? As if I care anyway. So yeah, tomorrow is the chemistry board practical in which I will have to do a volumetric analysis in which basically you have to let some liquid drop from one tube into a beaker and wait for the colour of the shit in the beaker to change. Then you note down the amount of liquid dropped from the tube and perform a couple of useless calculations. The other [and much more dreaded] thing I’ll be made to do is salt analysis. Basically I’ll be given a compound and I’ll have to put whatever I can find into it to get some weird colour or gas that will burn my nose hair. Eternal bliss, I tell you. I’m not particularly fond of this because I’m terrible at it. I’m impatient and whenever I don’t get any positive tests on my first attempt, I panic and give up. And considering that I have a 100% failure record in it, I’m not feeling very confident. Also, my chemistry teacher is such a character. I had to give a retest because I did badly in my original chemistry exam. I passed in the retest [to my absolute horror cause I thought I was gonna fail royally] but still I’ll be made to give a re-retest. So I went to the teacher to ask him why I was being made to give a retest when I’d already passed in this. He said, “Well, this test was very easy and still you’re just barely passing, so you have to give it again.” I was pretty much on the verge of saying that, “Dude, I’ve not got even 20% marks in your subject in the last year or so..and here I am, getting over 40%(33% is passing) but still I’m being called a failure. What is the deal with you? Why can’t you let me be confident about myself for once?” But I knew it’d be useless so I didn’t elaborate any further.

Also, amongst other things, I came to know that a daughter of one of my mother’s cousins met with a bad accident. Now, I’ve never seen that girl, don’t know her name but still I feel very bad for her. I can’t understand why exactly. But maybe it’s just because when her mother was talking to my mother, she was more concerned about the girl missing her class 11th exams and ruining her chance of getting into a good entrance examination. And I was like..what the hell? How can anybody be concerned about studies right now..the girl just escaped death almost. A tractor was just about to go over her face but it scraped some side of her face and it got damaged and all that. And still people were concerned about studies? I may be interpreting this in an entirely wrong fashion but it was weird to me. I’m sure her mother cares about her and all..maybe it’s just that I’m too touchy with people who have kids doing the same subjects that I am and running from one coaching centre to another to achieve success in the IIT-JEE and the AIEEE. It reminds me of how I’ve literally wasted the last two years of my life. Agreed there’s competition everywhere but this system is just not correct. Whatever anyone might try to explain, it’s not justified. Anyhow, I’m not gonna get into all that because this is just not the time to crib about the system. So, I hope you get well soon, my anonymous cousin and may you achieve success in whatever you wish to do. In other words, I hope you have the Time of Your Life.

Okay, time to go back to my dear Mr. Sulphuric Acid, Mrs. Hydrochloric Acid and their kids, Masters Oxalic Acid and Phosphoric Acid. I genuinely hope I don’t end up throwing one of you on the external examiner’s face. Peace.

Update - 4/2/2008

So, the practical is done and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I managed to do the written part neatly and also managed to do the titration and the salt analysis. They had told us which salt we were gonna get so it wasn’t a big deal. But hey, at least I didn’t have to ask anybody to tell me the confirmatory tests, I had learned those this time around.

The external didn’t look like a happy woman to me. She was a total disaster. She was looking like this mean looking woman with a hunter, leather clothes and high heels who would kill you if you didn’t answer the questions. Well of course, she wasn’t having a hunter and wasn’t wearing leather, but she was wearing heels and was looking mean and khadoos. And my not knowing anything didn’t really help. I thought my Viva was really funny. Here’s how it went:-

Me - Nope.

Teacher - What salt are you having?
Me - Aluminum Nitrate (haha, thanks teachers!)

Teacher - How come you came to know that without passing H2S?
Me - Uhh..I guessed?

Teacher - What is the formula of Aluminum Nitrate?
Me - Al(NO3)3 (Lol, if my teacher hadn’t written that on the board today, I was gonna give another “I don’t know”).

Clausius, states that a transformation is impossible whose only final result is to transfer heat from a body at a given temperature to a body at higher temperature; in other words, the spontaneous flow of heat from hot to cold bodies is reversible only with the expenditure of mechanical or other nonthermal energy.

The Second law of Thermodynamics states that every spontaneous change is accompanied by an increase in entropy which is a measure of the randomness or disorder of a system.

The alkynes have at least one triple bond in them, therefore, they are quite reactive chemically.

They readily take part in addition reactions and can also be easily oxidized.

I. Addition reactions (specially given in jee syllabus)

1. Addition of Hydrogen

If the triple bond is not present at the end of the chain of the molecule (it is not a terminal alkyne), its reduction (addition of hydrogen) produces either a cis alkene or a trans alkene depending upon the choice of reducing agent.

2. Addition of halogens

chlorine and bromine add on alkali

3. Addition of hydrogen halides

This addition takes place in accordance with Markonikov's rule(do you remember the rule?).
Peroxides have the same effect on addition of the HBr to acetylenes (alkynes) as they have on alkenes (do you remember the effect?).

4. Addition of water (hydration of alkynes) (specially given in jee syllabus)
In the presence of acid (H2SO4) and HgSO-4, a molecule of water adds to the triple bond at 348K. The catalyst in this reaction is HgSO4 (Mercuric sulphate). The final products of this reaction are carbonyl compounds aldehydes and ketones.

Initially enol is formed which is raidly converted into an equilibrium mixture containing keto form in excess. Enol is so called because it contains 'ene' (double bond) and an alcoholic group (ol).

Examples:
Addition of water to Ethyne or acytelene: Acetylene is passed into water (at about 330K) containing 60% H2SO4 and about 1% mercuric sulphate (HgSO4) as a catalyst, acetaldehyde is formed.

In the first step 'ethenol' is formed and in the second step the rearrangement of it takes place and its isomer 'acetaldehyde' is formed.

The conversion of enol form into keto form is termed tautomerism

5. Addition of hypohalous acid (HOX)

Alkynes react with two molecules of hypohalous acids in two stages.
For example take ethyne or acytelene and HOCl.
In the first stage HO gets added to one carbon and Cl adds to the other carbon.
In the second stage one more HOCl gets added to the intermediate product which has a double bond. The addition now follows markonikov's rule. OH gets added to HC-OH and Cl gets added to CH-Cl. Two OHs create instability and H2O molecule gets removed.
An aldehyde 2,2-Dichloroethanal (Dichloroacetaldehyde) is formed.

6. Addition of H2SO4
Acetylene adds two molecules of concentrated H2SO4 in two stages and forms ethylidene hydrogen sulphate as the final product.

In the first stage Vinylhydrogen sulphate H2C=CH-OSO3H is formed. (H gets added to one CH and OSO3H gets added to the other CH).
The addition of second molecule follows markownikov's rule. H gets added to CH2 and OSO3 gets added to the other carbon. Thus two functional groups OSO3H gets added to one carbon.
The final product is Ethylidine hydrogen sulphate.

IIT aspirants up in Andhra Pradesh

The number of students from the state who are trying to get into Indian Institute of Technology has increased by 25 per cent when compared to last year.
While nearly 39,000 candidates had applied for Joint Entrance Examination in 2007, the number went up to about 50,100 this year. Last year, over 500 students from the state secured seats in various IITs.

The JEE-2008 for admission to various undergraduate courses in the seven IIT's and other technological universities of the country will be held on April 13. The last date for submitting application forms ended on January 4.

"There has been more than 25 per cent increase in the number of applicants across the country and not just in Andhra Pradesh," said Mr N.M. Bhandari, chairman of JEE-2008.

Last year, 2.43 lakh students had appeared for the test and one lakh more students have applied for JEE-2008. The number of students competing for a seat has gone up to 77 while it was 55 last year.

There are nearly 4,500 seats available in the seven IITs across the country.

"The number of students competing for a seat in prestigious global universities such as Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology is eight," said Mr Bhandari.

"The competition for IITs is tougher."

Veteran IIT trainer and MLC, Mr Chukka Ramaiah, said the drop in standards and lack of faculty and infrastructure in most engineering colleges of the state had forced students to opt for IITs.

"Most of the engineering colleges in the state produce graduates who are unemployable," he said. "They are forced to undergo training in Jawahar Knowledge Centres to develop skills."

Meanwhile, the newly announced IIT at Medak may not start functioning from this year.

The softer side of IIT_JEE's toughness

The IITs declared the results of supposedly, the world’s toughest entrance exam to crack – the IIT JEE, on the 30th of May this year. Almost all the newspapers carried full-page coverage of the news, including even the male-female statistical break-up of qualified students; and of course smiling photographs of jubilant toppers who have made their parents, schools and cities proud. Out of a whopping 243039 takers, 8635 managed to qualify for the rankings to make it to the coveted IITs (including 587 girls, a fact lauded by the media seeing their dropping numbers all through these years).

We will all read these stories, congratulate those who made it with high ranks and the toppers will bask in this newfound glory for a long time to come. Do we ever realize that even if we assume 100,000 students appearing for the JEE seriously, more than 95,000 students will not make it to the IITs? Statistically, this gives a success rate of just 5% (and only 2% if we include all those appearing). Does anyone write anything in the papers for them? No, because it is only the toppers who deserve to be lauded, don’t they?

In the JEE world, there is break-neck competition, not to mention the tremendous pressure to succeed. While we may say that those buckling under pressure never deserved to get in, having appeared for JEE myself twice and having not made it to the IITs, I can tell you that not answering a couple of questions in the exam can throw you distantly out of the race. Surely, pressure has little to do in such a scenario. In such a situation, is it that those who miss it by a whisker or even a couple of them are not worthy of the best engineering education in the country? No, because JEE as an exam cannot decide their merit, currently. Only scholastic measurement of a student’s intelligence (which is how JEE tests prospective students) cannot serve as the best indicator of the personality of a student, the understanding of which is essential to determine whether a particular engineering stream is suited for him / her.

It is time the JEE changes its pattern, not only to reduce the stress the students take on themselves, but more so to ensure that the best minds, not merely those who can rattle off derivatives / integration sums in seconds or those who can reproduce electro-magnetism sums verbatim from the notes of the coaching classes in the so-called “Mecca of JEE training”. The CAT (for IIMs) has interviews and group discussions as an integral part of its selection process. Just as the country needs its best managers from the IIMs, the IITs were established to produce the best engineers. Instances of students having made it to the IITs and then committing suicide for not being able to cope up with the pressure have featured recently. On top of that, “coaching centers” whose only aim is to equip students to crack JEE, succeed in getting students inside the IITs, but without the necessary aptitude to succeed in their curricula. JEE must ensure that not only scholastic aptitude, but an attitude and personality match is also equally important for an IITan, which if not considered, will not only spoil lives of those unable to withstand the strain, but will also not allow deserving others a chance to get the best engineering education in the country.

The point here is two-fold; firstly, not all the best students make it to the IITs; and secondly those who deserved but didn’t, need not panic or worry. IIT is not the end of the world (an oft quoted phrase now). I won’t give examples of how many IITans (and how many non-IITans) have made it big in this world, as I believe it has been repeated ad nauseum. The power is within you. Remember Eklavya’s story, who became the best archer without the best teacher beside him. IIT may not be with you, but you don’t be without it. Of course you will miss the other part of the grind: the countless nights spent together with friends playing basketball, the mesmerizing IIT campuses etc. But such is life my dear friend. Good education is absolutely essential; but forget not the most important factor in life: to be a good human being.
Bottom-line: Be the Eklavya in your life; and the world is yours.

Elementary ideas of emulsions, surfactants and micelles (only definitions and examples).

Emulsions:

Emulsion is a liquid dispersed in a liquid.

Any two immiscible liquids form an emulsion.

For example, milk is a naturally occuring emulsion in which particles of liquid fats are dispersed in water.

Since two immiscible liquids do not mix well, the emulsion is generally unstable and separation of liquids may take place on standing for some time.

Emulsifiers are substances which are added to make emulsions more stable.

Emulsifiers reduce the interfacial tension between the two liquids.

Two types of emulsions: Oil in water and water in oil.

Identifications of two types of emulsions:
Dilution test: If on addition of water, the emulsion becomes dilute, it means it is oil in water emulsion.

Dye test: An oil soluble dye is used and if the whole solution becomes coloured it is water in oil emulsion. If only drops become coloured, it is oil in water emulsion.

The term adsorption implies the presence of excess concentration of any particular component in one of the three phases of matter (known as adsorbate) at the surface of liquid or solid phase (known as adsorbent) as compared to that present in the bulk of the material.

On the basis of the forces of attraction between adsorbent and adsorbate, two types of adsorption, namely, physisorption (i.e. physical adsorption) and chemisorption, may be identified.

Colloids or sols are the substances whose sizes lie in between the solutes present in a true solution (e.g., salt, sugar) and the solutes present in suspension (e.g., sand).

The diameters of colloidal particles may range from 1 to 100 nm. The particles in colloidal state do not settle down on standing, are not visible and they can pass through a filter paper. However, they do not pass through a perchment paper or animal membrane.

The freezing point is the temperature at which the solid and liquid states the substance have the same vapour pressure.

When a non-volatile solute is added to a solvent, the freezing point of the solution is always lower than that of the pure solvent.

The depression in freezing temperature is proportional to the molal concentration of the solution (m).

Kf is the molal depression constant. also called molal cryoscopic constant. It is defined as the depression in freezing point for 1 molal solution i.e., a solution containing 1 gram mole of solute dissolved in 1000 g of solvent.

Depression in freezing point is a colligatvie property as it is directly proportional to the molar concentration of the solute.

To find the molar mass of an unknown substance (nonvolatile compound), a known mass of it is dissolved in a known mass of a solvent and depression in its freezing point (ΔTf)is measured.

Addition of 0.643 g of a compound to 50 ml of benzene (density 0.879 g/ml) lowers the freezing point from 5.51°C to 5.03°C. If Kf for benzene is 5.12 K kg molˉ¹, calculate the molar mass of the compound. (IIT 1992)

Now however, all we have is the dregs. There’s Manohar Parikkar, ex-CM of Goa, who was apparently Mess Manager while he was a student at IITB. Oh, and there’s another rival Goan politician who’s also from IITB… I forget his name. And the last remaining vestige of the student activist or student politician would be Michael Vasanth from Aayutha Ezhuthu/Yuva (played excellently by Surya and botched up like manure by Ajay Devgan).

You don’t find such types anymore. Nehru saw to it when he took a critical first step of getting Soviet co-operation to convert the Hijli Detention Camp to IIT-KGP.

Since then, any Priya Venkateshan who would have come under the the influence of right-wing idealogy (or worse, left-wing), taken it upon herself to start and edit a student newspaper which would idealize and provide good press for Swami Vivekananda, Veer Savarkar, Bose, Godse, RSS and VHP (or alternately, China, Marx and Communism, with special attention to denouncing agriculture, hating Jews and pursuing an anti-US stance), spend half her youth in and out of lock-ups, wear khadi kurtas, thick-rimmed glasses and carry a jhola… okay, I’m getting ahead of myself… any such person has instead spent half her teenage in JEE coaching centers, then giving n-hazaar exams, and then wasting away at an undergrad college in the middle of nowhere, and which is certainly not a hub of original political thought, or anywhere close to one, and what she learns at college (if at all), has absolutely nothing to do with politics or running the country.

The brightest young minds in the country are busy swotting for entrance exams, so busy that they don’t glance at the paper unless it screams out about paper leaks or exam postponements. When they get together to discuss, it’s almost always about problems in Irodov or ML Khanna.

Student Union causes are now down to getting enough funds for Engineer, Incident, Saarang, Techfest, Shaasta, Mood I, Cul-Ah!, Down Sterling, Alcheringa, Strawberry Fields and godaloneknowswhatother college fest. Social causes, if any, include collecting money to be sent to earthquake victims at Bhuj, or cleaning the beach for the mandatory extra-curriculars Credit. Other worries include having nightmares about the (extracurricular interest) club website having crashed. Or worse, hacked into.

Instead of perusing political news and getting incensed, people now are forced to mug financial news and arbit stats; they need to be prepared for their IIM GD/PI. And anti-US sentiments ha! Which other place is affordable, Indian-friendly and provides good quality graduate education? The part of India that would probably have been incensed is safely in the US, sufficiently far away from causing havoc by voting. And the incensed ones that remain in India feel that the best way of lodging their protests is by *not* voting!

And we are the generation whose grandparents were members of Indira Gandhi’s Vanar Sena. And whose parents were brought up on the legend of Chacha Nehru, the kid-friendly PM. And who too, have grown on the same idealogy, so much that we would say “Nehru-Chacha? Naah…. how can you believe he sent Subhas Bose to the Gulag (concentration camp in the USSR) with help from Mountbatten and Stalin just because he feared Bose would be the PM? This guy loved kids! Any man who likes children can’t be all that bad…”

Mr. Nehru, you were probably the brightest person in your family (you were the last to get a college degree… only your great-grandson Feroze Varun has attained that distinction since… Antonia Maino failed to complete her spoken-English course… Rajiv dropped out…), your services would have been at great demand at Ogilvy and Mather. The US could very well take a leaf out of your book when it comes to shaping public opinion, perception and social engineering. You’ve basically insured generations of your progeny from public backlash irrespective of how much of their *own* garibi they hataao-fy.

Of course, your KGB Agent granddaughter-in-law tries her best, but being of foreign origin, she only divides and rules the country on sectarian lines by increasing Quota Raj and asking for head-counts of people of various religions in the Armed Forces, apart from pleading clemency for a convicted terrorist; she doesn’t quite understand the importance Indians give to education and social status the way you did.

PS: I don’t think students focussing on things other than politics is wrong. We need to focus on wealth-creation and technological innovation more than anything else now. But heck, just why are the inborn-leader kids not hitting the political scene?

Q) What curriculum is the test based on: ICSE, CBSE or SSLC? A) The test is not based on the curriculum of any Board. However, the questions are framed at the expected level of understanding and skills of a student who has completed 10th Std. Statistics of our earlier selection tests indicate no distinct advantage to students of any particular curriculum.

Q) What is the objective of the test? A) The test is aimed at evaluating the abilities of observation, comprehension, analysis and problem-solving.

Q) This test is held about a week after the class X examination. Is one week enough for preparation? A) The test is aimed at evaluating the level of understanding and application of concepts, which a student is expected to have acquired by class X. There is no specific preparation necessary or possible for the test in such a short while.

Q) What should I bring to the test? A) Bring your admission slip and black-ink ball-point pens. The answers will have to be marked in an OMR sheet using a black-ink ball-point pen only. IIT JEE Chemistry

I just completed posting around 10 points for each chapter. It took me 5 days to do the posting even though most of it was posting from the earlier study guide posts. This posting helped to me to look at all the chapters in a short time and also made me notice the gaps in various chapters in thes study guide. Visitors can take the basic framework and add the points they wish to add to the list.

Now I shall post more detailed points for revision. I plan to collect 100 points for each chapter, built around the core points.

Partial combustion of Hydrogen sulphide produce sulphur.

Bromine is reddish brown liquid
Iodine is steel grey solid

Allotrope

• Allotropes are elements that can exist in two or more different physical forms
• Diamond, graphite and buckminster fullerine are allotropes of carbon.
• The allotropes of carbon are all the element carbon. The type of carbon is determined from the bonding that occurs.

The carbon atoms in graphite are arranged in flat sheets that slide easily over each other, while the atoms in diamond are bonded in a complex, honeycombed structure that makes the solid much harder.

Atmospheric oxygen (O2) and ozone (O3) are allotropes of oxygen.

For example, phosphorous occurs in three forms--white, red, and black. White phosphorous is poisonous and very reactive, red phosphorous is not poisonous and it is only moderately reactive, and black phosphorous is nearly inert.

Rhombic and monoclinic sulfur are allotropes.

IIT Madras offers Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination 2008.

Details:

* Examination date is Sunday, May 18, 2008 between10 AM - 1 PM

* Sale of application commences on January 28, 2008

* Sale of application ends on March 3, 2008

* Five year integrated master's programme, leading to MA degree in three disciplines - Development Studies, Economics and English Studies.

* One objective type question paper of three hour duration in English and Comprehension Skill, Analytical and Quantitative Ability and General Knowledge covering the areas of Indian Economy (since Independence), Indian Society, Contemporary World Affairs (Post-World War II), and Environment and Ecology. Syllabus for examination is given in the admission brochure.

* Test paper is in English

Eligibility:

* Minimum 60% marks in aggregate [55% for SC/ST and persons with disabilities (PD)] in (10+2) or equivalent examination.

* In case the respective Boards award letter grades, without providing a norm for converting them to equivalent percentage marks, the norms decided by the HSEE Committee shall be final.

* General candidates date of birth cannot be earlier than October 01,1983.

* SC/ST/PD category candidates, date of birth not earlier than October 01,1978.

* 15% for SC and 7.5% for ST candidates with relaxed qualifying norms for admission.

* 3% for physically disabled, including leprosy-cured candidates, who are otherwise fit to pursue the course and who qualify for admission under relaxed norms relevant for this category.

* Reservation of seats for OBC candidates, if any, would be communicated through HSEE website as and when the Government order for the same is issued.

* Centres for entrance examination: Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi.

* Admission brochure contains details regarding application procedure, syllabus for HSEE, examination centres, courses of study available and other relevant information.

IIT entry tougher than Harvard, MIT

Well, its been ever known and it just became tougher. This year, about 77 students will be vying for a single seat at any of the seven IITs, i.e 3.22 lakhs students for a mere 4,193 seats. Wherein the competition across the oceans at Harvard is a mere eight per seat. No doubts, there are people in here for whom those greener pastures are a mere second option. But this great rush for seats shows not only the great potential among the Indian youth but also the scarcity of premium teaching institutes. The government of India is trying its best to come up with alternatives. Setting up of NITs (National Institute of Technology) all over the country was one such step.

According to data from IITRoorkee, the nodal IIT that will coordinate JEE-2008, 3.22 lakh students will take the entrance exam across seven zones in the country on April 13. They will vie for 4,193 seats spread across seven IITs.Moreover,around 200 foreign students have applied to sit for the JEE at the Dubai centre; this is the first time this year that the IITs have set up an exam centre outside India.
Going by present data, the average number of students vying for a seat has gone up from 55 to a tough 77.

Organising JEE chairman N M Bhandari said, “There has been a uniform increase of 25%-30% across all zones, which has led to the overall increase in applicants.’’ Zonewise data is unavailable, but the numbers in the western zone in particular have gone up from 46,000-plus in 2007 to 62,000, said N Venkataramani, chairman of JEE-2008 at IIT-Bombay.
Notably, the surge in applicants comes a year after the changes recommended by the C N R Rao panel appointed by the Union HRD ministry were implemented.
In 2007, the introduction of stringent eligibility norms had resulted in the applications falling from 2.9 lakh to 2.4 lakh. This year, however, the trend has again changed.
At the behest of the Rao panel, the screening had been done away with and a single objective test introduced. To restrict the number of those keen on taking the test, the committee had suggested that only students who secure a first class (60%) or equivalent in their class XII exams be eligible to sit for the JEE. Also, the maximum number of attempts permitted was restricted to two. The move, introduced in JEE-2006, also aimed at reducing exam stress, weaken the influence of coaching classes and “restore the sanctity of the school system’’.
But this year it seems that the recommendations have failed to discourage students from battling it out for an IIT seat. Director of IITMadras M S Ananth told TOI the numbers were “unanticipated’’, but added that more institutions, including Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology Society and Indian Institute of Maritime Studies, besides Indian School of Mines and Banaras Hindu University would admit students on the basis of JEE scores.

THE EXAM THIS YEAR
The JEE, to be held on April 13, will have two papers. Each of three hours, they will have a mixed bag of questions from maths, chemistry and physics. Students, though, will be given individual marks for the three subjects Earlier, the JEE was not a single-stage test. The IITs used to conduct a screening and those shortlisted could take the main subjective-type exam
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
General category candidates must secure a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in the qualifying exam (10+2).
